Garryn was born in Orzammar, the son of Bhelen Aeducan and Rica Brosca. He was born before Bhelen took the crown during the Fifth Blight and his younger brother was born after.

When Garryn was five-years-old, his mother Rica was murdered in an assassination attempt on Bhelen’s life. As a result he has very few memories of his mother that are vivid. Bhelen would ultimately take on a lover, and eventually marry her. A human mage by the name of Moira. She became the closest thing to a mother that Garryn had.

Growing up, Garryn never showed a particular interest in being the heir to the throne. Not that he didn’t think he’d be up to the responsibility, but because of how one could never know for sure who your friends were. Allies that turned against you, enemies that showed up in your time of need. It was a topsy-turvy world and Garryn wasn’t sure if he was up for the task.

He most definitely was not prepared for the shit storm that became his life after the Sixth Blight hit and the Darkspawn ultimately would overrun Orzammar, forcing the dwarves within to either die or flee for their lives to the surface.

He would never forget the look on his father’s face when he yelled at Garryn to take the survivors and flee to the surface, that his father would stay behind with the warriors and make sure they could get out. While Garryn and many of their people made it out, King Bhelen Aeducan did not.

Garryn never imagined his first order of business as King of the Orzammar people, would be to evacuate them to the surface. It wasn’t the popular opinion, but as it was surface or death, he saw little choice in the matter. That didn’t of course stop some from choosing certain death, due to their fears and views of the surface. This was something that Garryn felt was partially his fault, if he’d been a better king, perhaps they wouldn’t have chosen death.

Like his father, Garryn is a progressive ruler and is relying heavily on Orzammar’s allies in order for them to try and make a life for themselves on the surface. When they fled they were only able to take what they could carry, which wasn’t a lot.

While many nobles would prefer it if Garryn would focus on finding a suitable wife and ensuring an heir, Garryn simply isn’t ready. He wants to focus on keeping the dwarves safe on the surface, and he feels his love life and securing an heir is the last of his problems.

At first they settled in the ruins of Ostagar, but eventually that became overrun as well so they made their way north to the Free Marches where they settled in Tantervale and Garryn was made Lord Chancellor.

After a crisis of faith and conviction, Garryn chose to abdicate the dwarven throne, such that it is, and relinquish the mantle of his position in Tantervale for a much simpler life.

The Sword

The sword that his father gave him when he was old enough to start training with a real one holds a special place in his heart. It is not just a weapon but a symbol of his lineage and the expectations placed upon him. The blade, forged from the finest dwarven steel, is intricately engraved with the sigils of his house and runes of protection and strength. The hilt, wrapped in rich leather, fits his hand perfectly, a testament to the skilled craftsmanship of Orzammar’s finest smiths. This sword has seen countless battles and has been a steadfast companion through thick and thin.

His Father's Signet Ring

His father's old signet ring, a symbol of the Aeducan family's rule, is an heirloom of profound importance. Worn at all times, the ring is a tangible connection to his ancestors and the responsibilities that come with his bloodline. The ring is made of sturdy gold, embossed with the crest of House Aeducan, and has been passed down through generations. It serves as both a personal talisman and a mark of his noble status, grounding him in his heritage.

Collection of Books and Scrolls

A small collection of books and scrolls about Orzammar's history and culture occupies a place of honor in his private quarters. These texts are invaluable resources that detail the rich tapestry of dwarf society, including its legends, laws, and lineage. He uses them to remind himself of his people's past, drawing strength and wisdom from the tales of old. Furthermore, he takes pride in educating others about the intricacies of dwarven culture, ensuring that the knowledge and traditions of Orzammar are preserved and respected. This collection is not just for study; it is a link to the soul of his people and a tool for fostering understanding and unity.

Personality

Garryn was always a quiet boy growing up. Not shy per se, just not loud or the sort to get into any real trouble. That was usually his younger brother's domain. Garryn's reserved nature often made him an observer rather than a participant in the chaotic antics that unfolded around him. His demeanor was thoughtful and contemplative, traits that have followed him into adulthood.

Garryn is respectful of all people and tries to show that in his leadership. He believes that a true leader earns respect through empathy and fairness, rather than fear or intimidation. His interactions are characterized by a genuine concern for the well-being of his people. He listens carefully, values diverse opinions, and strives to make decisions that benefit the greater good. This approach has earned him the loyalty and trust of those he leads.

He falls in love easily but hasn’t had much luck at it in his young life. Garryn's heart is open and vulnerable, making him susceptible to the pangs of unrequited love and fleeting infatuations. Despite his earnest efforts, he often finds his affections misplaced or his romantic endeavors ending in heartache. However, his optimism remains unshaken, and he continues to hope for a meaningful and lasting connection.

Garryn has a fondness for nugs, the small, rabbit-like creatures that inhabit the underground world of Orzammar. He finds their playful nature and endearing appearances to be a source of comfort and joy in the otherwise harsh environment of the dwarven city. Garryn often keeps a few as pets, enjoying their company and the brief moments of levity they provide.

Unlike his father, Garryn doesn’t love hunting. The thrill of the chase and the satisfaction of a successful hunt never resonated with him as it did with the previous generation. He respects the tradition and the skills it requires but prefers to leave the activity to those who truly enjoy it.

He’s a warrior, and a good one, but he prefers fighting as a last resort. Garryn is highly skilled in combat, trained extensively in the arts of war, yet he views violence as a failure of diplomacy. His philosophy is to exhaust all avenues of negotiation and persuasion before resorting to force. In battle, he is strategic and disciplined, embodying a warrior who fights only when absolutely necessary.

He’d much rather win with his words. Garryn values the power of dialogue and believes that conflicts can often be resolved through understanding and compromise. He uses his intellect and eloquence to navigate complex political landscapes and to mediate disputes. His ability to articulate his thoughts clearly and convincingly makes him a formidable negotiator and an effective leader.
