When his Mother and Father separated, Cassian went with his mother, leaving his father behind. Later in life he would gain an understanding that his father's frequent absences were needed to keep he and his mother in a comfortable life that they had been accustomed to, but as a child, he only knew that he didn't see his father after a certain age. When pressed, his mother would tell him that the man had left and never seen fit to come back. Cassian, though, knew that life had a way of turning carefully laid plans on their head, and never faulted his father. No, he understood that he had been lucky, knowing he had a father, even for as short of time as he had, where other lads the same age didn't.
And holding a grudge wasn't in Cass' nature as it was. But, getting in trouble was. As a teen, he spent time running around with a pack of boys his own age and older, stealing and basically being nuisances to everyone and thing in creation. A fight, a fight had been his undoing, at sixteen. Pushed in a circle to fight another boy who couldn't have been much older than he, someone had put a knife in his hand, 'to make it interesting', and the recklessness of youth had emboldened him -- he had killed a man that day, and he was given two options. Hang in the noose for his crime, or go to the Wardens. Cass chose the Wardens. After all, the murder had been an accident, hadn't it?
All these years later, Cassian is still haunted by that death, so he spent ever day he could atoning for that mistake, protecting people, hunting evil. The Wardens had given him a straight path forward, a narrow walkway that would eventually lead to salvation, dying in service to others. But that service whispers, now and then, in his head, he can hear it, in the night, when last bell has wrung and the candles have been snuffed.
No one else seems to talk about it, those whispers -- but Cass knows. They all hear them. They all have too. After all, isn't that what they all signed up for?

Personality
Cassian has a rugged, non-nonsense demeanor, sarcastic wit, a deep sense of duty, often fighting battles in the shadow, but still carrying a weight of emotional baggage from past losses and hard-fought victories. Using his dry cynical sense of humor that hides his vulnerability, he's touch, fiercely loyal to his close circle, and will always put other's needs above his own. When it comes to fighting evil or protecting people, he's all in, no questions asked. Underneath it all though, is a person who's seen too much pain and destruction -- someone who uses their humor as a shield, masking the scars left by years of trauma and loss. There's a charming, and flirtatious side to him, but it's often used as another defense mechanism -- he's learned the hard way that connections can be a double edged sword.
Cassian's approach to conflict is straightforward; quick, brutal, and effective. He's honed his skilled through sheer necessity, and his tactical prowess is calculating and precise. Once he's locked on to a target, he never misses, whether it's a physical opponent, or a situation that needs solving. He's incredibly resourceful, often times making the most out of limited resources and unorthodox solutions. Cass will work alone when he has to, but he works better as part of a team, his team, the Grey Wardens.
He has a knack for getting himself into trouble, but his Warden partner is usually nearby to help him talk his way out of the situation, with a little mix of his own humor, confidence, and a certain disregard for authority. A little reckless, he enjoys the thrill of a dangerous situation, while being a complete paradox in that he is the calm one in an emergency -- keeping himself, and his team grounded while navigating the chaos. He's not quick to trust, but once earned his is loyal well past where others would give up. A complex blend of irreverence and heroism, you won't always know what's going on in his head, but he can always be counted upon in a pinch.
