Medicine and Hauntings, Such a Lovely Divide
Fear, open water, the dark
Nolan exhaled sharply, his lips curling into a grim line. He gave Celine's hand a reassuring squeeze as she leaned back against him. Her confidence was returning, even in the face of the demon’s taunting. That was a good start. Still, he could feel the tension in her muscles, the instinct to bolt or fight that was clawing at her self-control.

Yeah, it’s testing us, he murmured, his voice low and deliberate, a steadying presence against the chaos. But that’s all it is—noise. It wants you to jump, to give in. We’re not gonna let it win, alright?

He adjusted the blanket around them both, ensuring no cold air could sneak in. The warmth from the fire was beginning to settle in their bones, though the damp chill of the cave still lingered at the edges. Nolan pressed his cheek lightly to the top of her head, grounding her with his presence.

You’re tougher than it thinks, tougher than most folks I’ve met. That’s why you’re still breathing after everything life’s thrown at you. His tone was gruff, but there was a deep sincerity in his words. We’ll rest up, get warm, and deal with this thing on our terms. Together.

The demon’s howl rang out again, louder this time, reverberating through the cave walls like a physical force. It was a cruel, mocking sound that made the firelight flicker and dance in strange, unsettling patterns. Nolan didn’t flinch. Instead, he tightened his grip around Celine, holding her steady as though anchoring her to the moment.

Let it scream, he muttered, his voice barely above a growl. It’s just hot air. You and me? We’ve got something real. That thing’s got nothing but fear, and it’s not getting any of that from us tonight.

He shifted slightly, leaning back against the rough cave wall, bringing her with him. The steady crackle of the fire and the rhythmic sound of their breaths began to drown out the distant howls.

Now, let’s get some shut-eye while we’re safe and warm. Tomorrow’s another fight, but tonight? We’ve earned a little peace. His voice softened, trailing off as he closed his eyes, exhaustion and the heat finally beginning to pull him toward sleep.
