An Invitation Most Cordial

Tiberius selected the soup spoon and dipped it, reasonably pleased that Pavus’ kitchen seemed to remember his preferences – at least so far. Sampling the dish, he listened to the others with little desire to interrupt. Sensible, huh? Not always. But he trusted Enzo not to embarrass him too badly in any case.

“No.” He answered Akibrus, brow raising slightly as Enzo gave a scarcely more thorough answer. There had been a vast gulf between their Houses until Archon Arvina’s reforms had dealt Pavus a blow. It did not seem that they would recover, at least not with Enzo’s father Hadrian at the helm. Hard to blame the old man – he had waited a terribly long time for power to come to him, even limited as it was.

“We were what, fifteen? Sixteen? And it was up to your belt at worst.” Tiberius waved his hand dismissively and had a little bit more soup. Dabbing his lips with a napkin, he leaned back in his chair. “At that age, I was not ‘too dignified’ for anything. Though, Enzo did lose his boots. I will accept any accolades you care to give for saving the rest of his equipment on behalf of the Imperium.”

Now, a story from Lyric was a different matter – more interesting because he had not already heard it a hundred times. He shifted to look at her, frowning slightly. Homeless? How, when? That certainly wasn’t a tale one would want to spread around Minrathous. It would be better to let the moment pass.

Yet he could not. He looked to Aki for more, fingers lingering on his glass.

“I had not heard how you met. There must be more to it than that?”
