Bears are common wild animals found throughout the forests of Thedas. They are primarily nocturnal and tend to avoid human interaction, rarely attacking travelers unless provoked. When enraged, bears are extremely dangerous, capable of delivering massive blows that can knock a person off their feet. Some rangers have been known to summon bears to fight alongside them, utilizing the creatures' formidable strength.

Bears are generally shy and inactive during the day, making encounters with them infrequent. However, when provoked, these typically placid animals can become fiercely aggressive. They are most commonly encountered in the forested areas of Ferelden, with black bears being the most prevalent type. In addition to black bears, there are larger and more powerful great bears, which can be summoned by master rangers for enhanced combat capabilities. Bears can also be found in Orlais, including the Hinterlands and the Dales, where even larger and more powerful versions, like Old Scarred Paw, appear during specific quests.
