Phoenixes are large, dinosaur-like creatures found in some of the most inhospitable places in Thedas. Known for their aggressive nature and foul bite, they pose a significant danger to travelers who dare venture into their territories.

The Orlesians consider the phoenix a herald of woe. This belief likely stems from the creature's preference for desolate and dangerous locales, where only the most daring or desperate travelers venture. Adding to their fearsome reputation, phoenixes emit a sulfurous gas that reeks of rotten eggs and ancient peat bogs, enveloping flocks of these beasts in a pervasive odor of death. Contrary to the Orlesian penchant for metaphor, the menace of the phoenix is quite literal.

While phoenixes are occasionally hunted for consumption, this practice is fraught with peril. Nearly half of their organs are highly toxic, capable of causing severe poisoning and even liquefying a person's lungs if ingested. Thus, despite their potential as a food source, the risk often outweighs the reward, making phoenixes a formidable and largely avoided presence in the wilds of Thedas.
