Quillbacks are four-legged, beaked creatures native to the desert landscapes of the Western Approach in western Orlais. Their bodies are burgundy in color, with distinctive feathers protruding along their spines.

Scholars often attempt to rationalize the natural world through their knowledge, seeking comfort in the predictable laws of nature. However, the quillback defies these conventions, embodying nature's raw and untamed savagery.

With a hooked beak that seems to mock the laws of man and Maker, and rough, scaly hide, the quillback's appearance is anything but elegant. Its dorsal ridge, adorned with ebon spines, serves as a stark reminder of the cold and twisted spires of the Black City. These spines symbolize the harsh and unyielding aspects of nature that no scholar can ignore.

The quillback's existence poses a question: What Maker would inscribe the essence of His domain onto such a repugnant creature, a scavenger of wastes and deserts? The answer lies in the unsettling realization that the Golden City we dream of may be, in reality, the Black City, a symbol of our true place in an indifferent world. The quillback, with its decrepit spines, reminds us of the dark truths that lie beyond our understanding, waiting to reveal our insignificance in the grand scheme of things.
