Silence, you Uneducated Peanut

Rafael turned his head slightly, catching Adaria’s gaze with a lopsided grin that was far too pleased with itself. His eyes glimmered with a teasing light, but underneath the surface was something quieter, deeper—a warmth he couldn’t quite bring himself to hide.

Dangerous? Me? he said, drawing out the words as if considering them for the first time. I’ve been called many things in my life, Addy. A dreamer, a meddler… occasionally a nuisance. But dangerous? He leaned back on his hands, tilting his face toward the sun. I think I might just frame that one.

His grin softened, and he turned to face her more fully, his expression dipping into something thoughtful.

You know, I could say the same about you, he murmured, his voice quieter now, the teasing edge fading. Dangerous. Not in the stab-you-in-the-back sort of way, though I’m sure your brothers would have opinions on that. No… His lips curved slightly, almost reverently. You’re dangerous because you make someone like me—someone who’s spent so much time keeping things just far enough away—want to stay. Want to stop running.

The words surprised even him, slipping out like an accidental confession, but once they were out, he didn’t regret them. Instead, he let them settle into the space between them, his gaze never leaving hers.

So, let’s make a deal, he said, leaning a little closer, his grin returning, though it was softer now. I’ll try not to let this go to my head if you promise not to let me scare you off. Because, Addy… I’m in this with you. Dangerous or not.
