Salad of doom
talk of criminal activity
“Oh, Winnie. I wish they all could be. I really do.” Shining moments, neat and tidy the way he liked. Chateau d’Onterre had not been their fault – but it had been a mess. But she had his agreement, which was enough. Katrien relaxed, up until the point he mentioned Morrigan. Her brows lifted, momentarily shocked into silence. She rolled her tongue around in her suddenly dry mouth, considering.

“I – Well. I suppose she would know more about the wards and the palace than literally anyone else.” Kat didn’t trust anyone that was close to power. Specifically, human-centric power – which the seat of the Empire most certainly was. Morrigan had been in the pockets of more than one empress. Still might be, if the old dowager lived. Certainly, she was connected through her son – married a year ago to the foolish young emperor.

“If you think she can be objective about her family, and can reach her … Do it.” Katrien shrugged, showing her hands. What if the old witch was up to something? She’d have to be careful who she sent along. A careful choice between reliable folks she could trust – and whose deaths would not leave the Forsaken crippled if the worst happened. She hated making choices like that.

“Well, let’s not waste any time. I’ll send some folks in before I leave. Kiss kiss.” Katrien stepped a bit closer and made a flamboyant gesture out of kissing the air on either side of Ailwin’s head. She thought he probably hated it as much as she hated being loomed over. Then she waved and backed away, braids swaying as she made her way out of the office.
