No people didn’t want to leave their homes, but as Leaf’s voice boomed through the air many started making quick tracks to gather what they could and go. The two sisters quickly evacuated what space they needed, then with raw magic, tore down the two buildings. Leaf looked over shoulder to Bethany across the way, yelling with a chuckle. “Just like old times Sis,” feeling out with her magic to sense Beth’s, adjusting to match as the bricks and mortar was repurposed, moulded by two craftsmen.
Their magic intertwining, Leaf felt herself smile. This might actually work. It was almost nostalgic, reminding her of the early days when Bethany’s magic was newly emerging. They had trained, practised together ever since then until their talents took them in different directions.
As the levy began to take shape, her hands gesture, smoothing out gaps where water broke through. The water level around them dipped lower, a reassuring sign they were on the right course. Good. The less water there was down here, the higher chances Darktown wasn’t a drowning pool of death.
“Ok… I think that’s the best we’re gonna get,” she nodded, concentrating on the next step. “Let me… take on the rest now. Ease up slowly, I’ll take over and ...” shit, they needed a signal. “...You toss up a fire bolt when the coast is clear your end, yeah?”
Taking her sister's burden encumbered Leaf to the spot. Hands splayed as she braced the wall of mud and stone against the weight of the torrents behind. Her stance shifted to gain a better footing, she couldn’t afford a slip else tearing down these peoples homes had been for nought.
Despite the direness of the situation, Bethany couldn't help but take some small pleasure in being able to cast freely with her sister again. They had different strengths, but when they worked together they complemented each other in a way that had little comparison.
"You got it," she confirmed, agreeing on the signal and carefully shifting the weight of the spells to her sister. The moment her burden was lifted, she made eye contact with Leaf, gave a quick nod, and dashed off. She called upon air to make her paces swifter, following the directed deluge to where they'd left off.
She didn't hesitate, pulling whatever was within sight into line to extend the reach of the makeshift dam, shifting the flow of through the city and out toward the docks where it would be able to drain more safely. Warnings were shouted, and heeded quick enough as best she could see, but she didn't dare stop. If she stopped the water were flood everywhere and it was barely controlled at it was.
By the time she got to the docks, she was more spent than she'd been in ages. She felt her stamina was pretty good, but it had been a while since she'd had to extend herself quite so much. Still, she would keep everything in place until the danger had passed, and sent a fire bolt up into the air to let her sister know she'd done her part and now they just had to wait until things let up.
What Leaf lacked in subtlety, Bethany excelled in, and was there to tie up the loose, frayed strands. With the weight of the spell now in her hands she pushed through the strain, settling the heavier burden on her shoulders. Her grin to Beth was fleeting, but there was always time for a quiet, unspoken moment between the sisters. Leaf nodded, turning back to the task of acting bulwark.
Sweat soon beaded across her brow with the mounting pressure behind, her foot slipped back a fraction only to be dragged back to the line. She would hold out. Grunts of effort fell as water sought to find any weakness in the earthen barrier. Leaf’s fingers gestured, plugging the gaps with what reserves she had left.
You know I could help…
No. I’m more than capable, thank you.
I’m just saying..
Look, if you don’t shut up, we’re going to drown. So, put a sock in your trap and let me concentrate.
Shaking her head, Leaf forced Korr’s voice to the back of her mind, hardening her focus. As her breaths became pants and her arms shook, the signal came through finally. “Nice one, Beth,” relief giving her the energy to gradually relinquish the spell. Too fast and she might as well bid the Maker hello, and getting out of the way was wiser if she intended to remain breathing, than drowning.
Delving into the last of her stamina, she shifted some of the mud from the barrier to create a platform, turning and waved a free hand, releasing the kept torrent down it’s route to the docks. As the weight of resistance faded and her mound of sodden earth and rock rose, Leaf knee’s, one hand keeping the spell in check as she gauged the rushing waters below. Then they shifted towards Darktown and the evacuations there.
The trek back up from the docks felt like it took ages. She couldn't completely let go of the spells right away, touching things up and solidifying the route as she made her way slowly back up to Lowtown. She stopped to lend a small heal or two as well to those she came across who needed it. She sincerely hoped that Leaf and Sebastian wouldn't need too much from her on that front the rest of the day, she wasn't entirely sure how much she had left to give.
What felt like ages later she slogged her way back to where she'd left Leaf. And there her sister was, looking similarly spent. But Sebastian wasn't in sight - was he still down in Darktown? A thread of worry started to weave its way through her. Perhaps they should go find him...
"Leaf!" she shouted, waving to her get her attention. "Should we head down to find Seb?"
She wanted to lay down, but everything was sodden and muddy. Leaf had slumped down, leaning against the mound of earth behind her as she took a well earned rest. Her laboured breaths soon evened out while eyes followed the torrent making its way safely towards the harbour. With a scoff the Champion shook her head, “How many more times do we have to save this goddamn place?”
But Seb, where was Seb?
Frowning, Leaf’s head turned towards Darktown. He’d gone there to aid the evacuations, but unlike Bethany he had no way to communicate if he needed aid. A fear gripped her belly, growing and gnawing until she managed to force herself back onto her feet. Hand plunged into earth to gain whatever grip and as she stood, Beth’s voice came through the air and dumbly she withdrew one to wave in return. Her foot slipped, but the flagging mage didn’t fall, only paused before deliberately rising to stand.
“Yup. After I have a flask. I dunno about you little sister, but that was an effort.” They were no good to him half-dead either. Feeling around her belt, Leaf would take a flask off, biting the cork off before knocking it back. “You want one, or do you have already?”
