Ever since her conversation with Zevran some months back Elanna had not quite been able to let go of the questions it raised about why Byron was put forth for the crown.  She hadn't paid it much mind at the time; she'd been too distracted by the circumstances that had led to there being an opening at all.  But it seemed all too convenient now.  Byron was a good man, and had made every effort to be a good king, but he'd not wanted it.  So why had he claimed it in the first place?

The logical conclusion was that there was an underlying motivation for it, and the bastard theory seemed more and more promising every day.  Byron would always do everything in his power to protect those close to him, and if there was a child in the balance, well, that would do it.  She's quietly looked into it over the past several months, and she had not been able to identify a candidate for a Ferelden mother, but there were opportunities for there to have been an Antivan one.  She couldn't be absolutely certain, but it was looking more and more likely that someone in Antiva, quite possibly the Crows, could be holding the life of his child over him.

But presumption was all she had.  Getting the actual proof would take more time and resources than it would be wise to risk, and so instead she decided that it was better to ask her dear friend if she was indeed onto something or not.

They met often, so setting up a private meeting was easy enough and wouldn't seem out of the ordinary.  No, the only thing that was different today was her nerves.  An anxiety coiling in her gut that wouldn't let go until she managed to put this whole train of thought to rest.

Once they were alone, she was hesitant in a way that she so rarely was around him.  "Byron, there's something that's been bothering me lately.  And I need to ask you a question, but I..." she let it trail off, looking away uncertainly for a moment before locking eye with him again.  "We've always been truthful with each other, and I need you to promise me you will be when I ask this as well."
